any think, that the name Moguilev has arisen from a word combination
"mogila lva" ("grave of lion"). There is a legend, according to which lived
the robber, on the name Masheka. He had the girl, because of her treachery,
he was caught and executed. A place, where the robber Masheka was buried
have named "mogila lva" ("grave of lion"), and mountain where he was hidden
was named "Mashekovka". But historians refute this legend.
But most probably is following. Moguilev has received the name from a
word "mogila" ("grave").
Our grandparents named "Mogila" ("grave") any suitable hill, eminence.
The mountain Mogila is a modern Gorky park.
On the following pages we still shall return to this mountain.
The second question: when the town was found?
Point of counting for any town is the first mention it in any annals
and in general in any written source. The people lived on this ground
since early Iron Age. They grinded various iron axes and arms,
which have found then during the excavation. The town begins there, where
the people live and there are any strengthenings. For example, fortress
with guns.
The date 1267 is confirmed only indirectly.
That's why there is no document, where would be black on white
written: "In 1267 from Christmas Jesus the town of Moguilev has appeared".
The strengthenings and settlement existed in the 12-th century.
200 men lived there approximately.
So, totals: the town of Moguilev is found in 1267 and this name arises from
a word "mogila" ("grave") - eminence, mountain. The initial settlement is
revealed on a place of present Gorky park.
