"
A subject of a history is in the past, that does not pass, as the
patrimony, lesson, litispendence, as the eternal law. Studying the
grandfathers, we learn the grandsons, that is, studying grandparents, we
learn ourselves. Without knowledge of a history we owe to recognize
ourselves as contingencies which do not know, how and what for we came in a
world, how and what for we live in it, as well as how and to what aim we
should aspire, as mechanical dolls, which are not born, and which are made,
which do not die according to the law of life and which are broken owing to
someone's children's whim.
